Make Your Own Oilcloth Coasters ~ A Simple Sewing Project

I love these little coasters! They are made with the leftover oilcloth from our kitchen table. They are toddler-proof (for the most part) since they can't be broken or cracked. They can't be used as a frisbee to clock someone in the forehead like our old ones. Alas, these are user-friendly, wipe-friendly and make-friendly.

Simple Supplies:
  • oilcloth scraps
  • round container to use as template with diameter of approx. 4 1/2 inches
  • pencil
  • pinking shears
  • sewing pins
  • sewing machine
  1. Using your round template, trace out two circles of oilcloth and cut to size.
  2. Place under-sides of two circles together and pin in place.
  3. Sew them together around the edge of the circle as shown in figure "3".
  4. Remove pins.
  5. Cut around the rim of the circle with pinking shears to make a pretty edge (making sure you don't snip the seam) and you are finished!
You can place them directly on your coffee table, stacked up, nice and pretty. Or, you can put them inside a tiny basket or tray. For a simple sewing project for baby, visit here.

"The use of sewing is exceeding old,
As in the sacred text it is enrold:
Our parents first in Paradise began."
~ John Taylor (1578-1653)

  1. Those coasters are a good idea. Myself, I sorely need an oilcloth for my table. I've been using my cotton cloths so often that one is fading dreadfully. Thanks for the idea.

    1. Oilcloth is neat, neat, neat! It is slick on one side (for easy clean up of the dinner table, etc.) and soft on the other side to protect the surface that you use it on. Very practical but fun when you find a cute print...

    1. Hi there! I got this particular oilcloth pattern outside the US. However, I have found cute ones in the past at Joann's Fabric store, Jenny's Fabrics (Calif) and Woof & Warps Fabrics (in Long Beach, Calif., the best ever selection). Hope this helps and sorry that I couldn't give you the specific name of the other one. I am glad you like it, I really loved the look of it myself :)

  6. Very cute! I think I would like to make them large enough for some place mats! Now I will be on the hunt for some oilcloth with that same pattern.

  8. This is something I could do for placemats, but it would take just the right oilcloth pattern...I will check out the Woof and Warps website :) What a great idea and simple for younger children with some help on the sewing machine, JES. Very cute!
Hugs and a blessing to you :)
