Vintage 1920s Kitchens ~ Spring/Fall Cleaning Inspiration

I love to look at homes for cleaning inspiration, especially the older ones.

You get ideas on how to organize.

You get ideas on how to decorate.

You get ideas on different color combinations.

You get ideas on how to situate your cooking pots, utensils and mixing bowls.

And then you get excited to go into your own kitchen.

You get inspired to implement some of the same concepts.

And you get energized to have the same clean look.

And when the cleaning, organizing and fluffing is finished (though it never really is)....

You fall in love with your home all over again.

STEPS TO A SPRING CLEAN KITCHEN

"First tidy up. Then clean the stove and refrigerator.
Empty any cabinets or drawers that have become dirty or disordered, wipe them out,
and neatly replace the objects in them.
Do backsplashes and cabinets, doors and doorknobs, lightswitch plates.
Next, clean table- and countertops, then the sink.
Then sweep or vacuum the floor.
Wash the floor last."

For fun, which kitchen would you pick as your own?

My choice would be the blue/cream kitchen (in the first picture in this post).

I love the checked curtains and the wooden towel rack.

I adore the matching canister and jar sets.

I am in love with the look of the hanging utensils.

And that (sigh!) stove...

  1. I liked the last one. I loved how the fall colors just worked together. But then, there's the blue kitchen...😊

  2. And after the floor is washed and has dried, I always sweep it again. *wink* Never fails. Crumbs appear.

  3. I love the last picture, but they are all lovely, neat and clean kitchens. I thought it was interesting how there was a little stool at every sink, a restful way to work through mountains of dishes! :) Love, Tina xx

    1. The last picture is very cheery and peaceful! It would be lovely! And I didn't even notice that about the stools! How interesting... and a nice way to take a break while working!

    2. I noticed the stools, too. I don't have room in my kitchen for one. Too bad.

  4. There is something about that little green and blue nook in picture 4 that draws me. I have always wanted that sort of seating and to be right by a window, well its just lovely. For us it will be Autumn cleaning but thats good too.

    1. Isn't it sweet? I fell in love with the rose painting (or is it a decal) on the furniture in that picture...

  5. I like all of them, but I am drawn to the past ways and furnishings.
Thank you for posting these. What a lovely way to start the day, with peaceful pictures from a bygone era. I truly seek to replicate that time period in our home.
Your posts are always uplifting and encouraging, Jes. Thank you.

    1. I used to eat on one when we shared a home with our Aunt. She lived from the Great Depression and it may have come from that time... It was pale green.

  7. They are all beautiful. I would be picky and chose my favorite feature from each pix:) I love the sinks with the double drain boards! (like pix #2) Also, isn't it interesting that there is a stool at the sink in nearly every pix?

  8. Our little brick farmhouse was built in the '50s and has a large kitchen. I have a dining room type table, chairs and china cabinet in it along with a reproduction dry sink. They are all dark or medium wood shades. I'd love to paint everything white, but I'm too scared to do it just yet. I've seen cabinets that's looked terrible painted, but I may dive in and do that someday. I'd love one of those apron sinks, too, but they are sooo expensive. Ah well, we're making do. :)
    Have a great Wednesday.

    1. Your house sounds lovely! I try to paint everything I can white too but hubby loves wood so there is a bit of a rub and compromise here and there :) I too LOVE the apron sinks... It is fun to dream though and do the best with what we have. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Gosh, they're all so charming, but I think my favorite was the one with the green sink and ice box. Green is my favorite. Some of them reminded me of my g'parents old bungalow in Los Angeles. I always loved an eat-in breakfast nook. I wish some builder around here would re-create some of those older, charming homes, but with the modern technologies like new plumbing, electrical, & A/c. But I have always loved those giant old sinks (very practical if you cook lot) and booth seating. I have never been a modern girl.

    2. Well there is something I find in each kitchen that is uniquely quaint and lovely...the pretty sinks, stoves, hutches, shelves, windows....it's difficult to choose just one! I especially love the ones that have a brightness in them with cheery pops of color here and there. I think I will go with the very last one "Kitchen Inspiration". This was fun - thank you! :-)

    3. That last kitchen would be dreamy with a morning cup of coffee! What a pleasant place to start the day with all that sunlight! Great choice! :)

  10. While I love them all, my favorite is the 7th pic with the Hoosier cabinet and the enamel kitchen table. I have an enamel table like that and have always wanted a Hoosier...maybe one day. Thank you for sharing such lovely kitchens. It made my day!

  11. JES. Ah, the romance of a lovely kitchen! Not surprised you're getting many responses on this. I love the stool under the sink (sigh). This week I pulled a counter stool over to the drawer next to my sink, placed a cutting board on the opened drawer and set a spell as I worked. Also, loved the curtains! Not many use pretty kitchen curtains today. I like to change mine with the seasons....D.

    1. Good observation on the curtains D! They all are lovely! I do remember shopping for some and not being thrilled with the results. I ended up using a cafe rod and clips with a pretty floral runner across to act as a valance. I too like to change these things with the seasons. It keeps things fresh! :)

  12. I would have to say I love the last one. It is so sunny and bright. I love those 1920s Era homes and airy decor. I also love the breakfast nooks, although they would be impractical for my family. Maybe one day when the kids are grown...

  15. Love the pictures of the older kitchens. I kept noticing the stool under or near the open sink. How handy for children to wash hands. But I can't imagine sitting down to wash dishes. Do you think they were there as a place, out of the way when not in use?

    1. I am not sure how they used them... but when I dip into my memory archives, I recall my great aunt who lived during that time period, did have a stool in her kitchen! Everyone commenting on the stools brought that back but I am not sure what she did with it! I am going to have to consult my mother on that one... I would assume they kept it under the sink area when not in use... How interesting that 100 years later and we can't imagine needing one in our kitchens! :)

  16. They are all lovely, but I really like the nineth one. With its green and cream colors. And that stove...love it!

This weekend, hubby and I will be putting tongue and groove boards half way up my walls. It will protect my walls from little boys and it will give my red kitchen a country feel. I deep cleaned my kitchen last week and moved some things around that were more functional for me. It looks way better.
I think its time to hang my spring curtains up and spruce up my fake flowers on top of my cabinets. I just love a clean and tidy kitchen.
Loved your post! Thanks for sharing Jes!

    Hugs,
    Amy

    1. That is a really happy kitchen! And with those touches of red that you already enjoy! The tongue and groove boards will be wonderful to have! I am sure you are bursting with excitement! My hubby recently fixed up our kitchen area and every time I walk in I just fall in love with it all over again! :) How great it must be to have that deep cleaning out of the way! I just did our bedroom today and am thrilled... Thanks for stopping by!

  21. Oh! I love all of these kitchens. How to choose one? I love all of the sinks. I would definitely love to have one of those. I love the benches on either side of the table with the window. They look like such a cozy place to sit. And I love all of the openness.

  22. I want to thank you for your post...........I so look forward to it all the time...I learn so much....My question I have is...What do I do about a Husband who acts as though Homecaring is just unnecessary? Growing up His Mother did not keep a tidy Home....I remember the first time I went to Her House, dirty laundry was piled up in the bathroom floor so bad, I could barely use her facility.....I was not raised this way at all.....I Love to Cook, Clean & Keep the inside & outside neat & clean.......It does not have to be immaculate, but clean....He does not seem to care & does not help at all, not even in taking the curtains down in the Spring for cleaning......Do I just give up? I can hardly stand the thought of it......Is it allright to keep cleaning , even if I have to clean around Him? I need Help & Motivation to be the Woman called me to be........Please Help!!

    1. Hi Deborah, The Scriptures write that we women are to "keep the house" (Titus 2:5). When doing so, it is unto God and not man.... Also, to be fair, I know many men who don't help with the cleaning or taking down of curtains and so forth -- just as I know many women who wouldn't change the oil in their cars or replace the filters. Please don't lose heart... He may appreciate your efforts more than you or even he even realize. Perhaps this is his way of getting some attention from his lovely wife. I know that sometimes we can run around all in a huff to get "things" done and meanwhile our hubby's may feel that the house is more important than spending time with them... If you keep a balance of your work and time with your husband, you will be fulfilling your God-given role as the helpmeet just beautifully. I hope this helps a bit! Love, JES
