"The Lemon.—This fruit is supposed to be a native of the North of India, although it is grown in nearly all sub-tropical climates. In general, the fruit is very acid, but in a variety known as the sweet lemon, or bergamot (said to be a hybrid of the orange and lemon), the juice is sweet. The sour lemon is highly valued for its antiscorbutic properties, and is largely employed as a flavoring ingredient in culinary preparations, and in making a popular refreshing beverage."

I love lemons - wish they would grow here. Hubby likes to throw a couple of the lemon juice ice cubes in when he is cooking salmon:) He likes how easy it is.
ReplyDeleteOh, too bad! Lemons are a fun little fruit! :)
DeleteI do like the idea of lemon with salmon! One of my favorite fish...
Oh, I love lemon everything. Sadly, half the time when I go to buy them they are shriveled so I'm going to making all I can with them now while they're still in good shape. I love the sound of the fabric softener. Thank you for sharing your recipes and labels.
ReplyDeleteHave a sparkly weekend!
I guess I have taken for granted the lemon orchards surrounding us! They are a blessing indeed! :) I hope you like the fabric softener!
DeleteThere is no way we can grow any citrus here in the north, but I stock up on citrus in the winter when it is cheaper. I am saving my orange peels, and will now start saving my lemon peels. I am very interested in the fabric softener made with lemon peel - sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing these wonderful lemon uses!
ReplyDeleteHi there! It is a blast to recycle the peels. I call it kitchen-crafting and find it to be both productive, frugal and fun! :)
DeleteWonderful and helpful post, dear JES!
ReplyDeleteYou had a few suggestions here that I will certainly be using, thank you.
There is something about the enjoyment of being "productive, frugal" and all the fun that goes with it!
Have a beautiful blessed day.
Joy!
Debbie
I must agree with you Debbie! Thanks for your sweet visit and happy kitchen-crafting! :)
DeleteI have been compiling information for a blog post on the healing benefits of lemon and was going to come search out your awesome citrus series when low and behold here you have it all in one place for me. Thanks, I have really enjoyed this series and really wish I could grow those babies here in Northern Utah.
ReplyDeleteAh, too bad you can't grow them. I have always lived in citrus climates so I take it for granted I guess! A few of the posts also share medicinal info such as the cough syrup and dried peel one I think ;0 It was nice hearing from you Annie and I hope all is going well in your neck of the woods! Have a wonderful weekend!

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post, JES. You amaze me with your knowledge. Hugs!
Hi Stephanie, thanks for your sweet visit! I do recommend freezing lemon juice as it comes in handy!!! Especially in the summer when they are out of season :)
DeleteWow!! Lemons have many wonderful uses. My mom has a lemon tree. It is pretty young and only produce 4 lemons this year. She also has a sour orange tree which is much older and it produces many oranges. And also has many wonderful uses. Thanks so much for sharing this.

ReplyDeleteMy Meyer lemon tree has produced 14 lemons for me this year - and it's only a couple years old! In anticipation of future years, I am pinning and printing most of these suggestions! Thanks! Right now I pick them when we have fish, and I am saving a few more for some home brewed Ginger Ale! Have a great weekend!

ReplyDeleteI hope some of these ideas will be useful to you Sandra! :)
Delete(I hope I didn't just post this twice, but I think I deleted my comment) I just found this recipe for lemon dishwasher detergent, which, so far, works really well! Nice to use something non-toxic on my dishes, and for about 1/2 the price of my regular detergent on sale:) http://www.mannsmooring.com/?p=939
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Thank you for sharing! :)
DeleteI also made some of your lemon extract - so nice! I then used some of it to make a nicely scented lemon-foam hand soap modifying this recipe:

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing here today! :)
DeleteVery interesting. I was just reading about lemons this week.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could get my hands on a big box of lemons, these pictures are so beautiful! So cheery and bright in the winter months. I've pinned, maybe I'll be able to find some good looking lemons somewhere. Thanks for sharing on the Homestead Blog Hop JES!
ReplyDeleteCould you sub pretty much any of the other citrus fruits for the lemons? (ie. oranges, grapefruits, limes) I would assume so?
ReplyDeleteHi there!
DeleteIn many of these, yes. Though keep in mind that they do differ a bit in nature... (for instance orange "juice" doesn't can well and will become bitter) common sense can guide you :) Hope this helps!
I love lemons, lemon juice and zest. Great collection!
