Calendula Healing Lip Balm {DIY} for Chapped and Dry Skin Too

If you are suffering from dry, chapped lips (and/or skin), you may want to prepare some "Calendula Healing Lip Balms". As calendula is a beautiful skin healer, these balms can also be used for cuts, scrapes, minor burns, insect bites, stings, etc., making them a nice addition to the first aid kit. They take only minutes to make once you create your medicinal oil. Simply melt a few ingredients together and pour into containers.

Simple Supplies:
  • 2 tbsp. calendula infused oil (via almond, olive, coconut or jojoba oil) (directions to make infused oil is here and how to identify calendula in your back yard is here)
  • 2 tsp. grated beeswax or pastilles (pastilles are very convenient to have for these projects because you don't need to grate them and create a mess, just measure!)
  • 4 drops of essential oil (your choice but I used 2 drops each of lavender and chamomile since they are wonderful skin healers)
  • 1 tsp. honey (optional)

Place your infused oil in a double boiler (or make one by putting a heat proof pan or glass inside of a pan of simmering water) and let it heat up a few minutes on your stove top. A glass Pyrex measuring cup is a nice choice because of the convenient pour spout.

Next, add your beeswax into the oil and stir occasionally until melted together (should take only a few minutes). Turn stove off. Let mixture cool a few minutes and stir in your honey (if using) and essential oils. You don't want to add these last two ingredients while it is too hot or the oils will evaporate and the raw honey will no longer have the benefits of being "raw".

Consistency tip: You can dip a spoon into the balm and place it in the freezer for a few minutes. If it is too firm for you, reheat and add in more oil. If it is too soft for your liking, reheat and add in more wax.

Pour into chapstick containers (making sure the mixture is evenly combined by stirring so that the honey doesn't sink to the bottom). You will want to have your containers prepared (open and ready) because once you start pouring the liquid, it will solidify quickly. If you have a problem with the mixture solidifying prematurely, simply place remains back into double boiler, remelt and pour.

This recipe fills approx. six basic chapstick containers and should keep for one year in a cool, dark area. This also make a wonderful gift! For our complete collection of DIY calendula recipes, visit here!

If it must be so now, do this;
take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels,
and carry down the man a present,
a little balm..."

  8. We grew calendula last year with hopes of making diaper rash ointment-- but it all got to be too much for us. At least we harvested the seeds; there's always next year!

  13. Hi JES, a lovely recipe, thank you for sharing! I am visiting my mom, and we have made calendula - coconut oil - beevax - cream ~ I have used this for dry skin to our sons ever since they were small. Now mom taught me to make it, it is surprisingly easy! I like the idea of adding essentiel oils and honey ... I will do that next time.
    And your sweet note on my blog made me really happy ~ thank you for brightening my day!
