Apothecary Herb Labels {Free Printable} ~ Home Pharmacy Series

"Always put labels on vials of medicine, and keep them out of the reach of children. Be careful to label all powders, and particularly all white powders, as many poisonous medicines in this form are easily mistaken for others which are harmless."
~ Beecher, Catharine & Harriet Beecher Stowe, American Woman's Home, 1869

As my desire is to make this Home Pharmacy Series fun, it means that labels are in order (and for me, to label is to love!)! Although they are pretty to use, they are also quite practical. We are sharing eight pages worth based on the most commonly used herbs. And don't be discouraged, I don't have even half of these herbs... yet! But they are included so that you can use them as your home apothecary grows. It is a very exciting time when I am able to cut out a new label to add to my collection (and especially if it is one I have found and harvested for free)!

{I almost hesitated to share them because they are not "perfect" (fonts are not all the exact size due to long names, etc.). However, for this busy homemaker, homeschooler and homesteader, they must will do. We will just consider them "rustic".}

Each label features the common herb name along with the latin name for a more "apothecary" feel. We also included some extra blank labels for your specific needs. You can cut and paste them to the front of your bottles and/or jars or you can affix them atop of your mason jar lids. You may even want to print them out on sticker paper for a stronger adhesive.

You will find the free download for these labels HERE.

This post is a part of our Home Apothecary Series.

  1. Oh JES, I'm so glad you did decide to share your labels. They're really beautiful. And I love that you included the scientific names of the herbs, too. I can't imagine that anyone would be bothered by such a slight difference in font size from one label to the other. I'm wondering what type of glue stick you use on the labels? Some of my labels have been slipping of my lids so I think I must need a better adhesive. I can't wait to print these and use them. Thank you so much for all you share!

    1. Thanks Toni, for some reason, I just wasn't completely satisfied (and I really don't have the time to hem and haw over it!) but my daughter talked me into sharing anyways... Aren't daughter's great!? :) I have had some of my labels slip off too and I am attributing it to a humid climate (for us at least). The sticker sheets may be the better way to go or perhaps the spray adhesive... I am glad you will use these. They are fun :)

  2. JES, I absolutely love your home pharmacy series! So far I've made some personal hygiene products and several of the medicines. I have chickweed tincture in the making, as well as vanilla extract and mint extract. I really want to use your printable labels but the Scribd doesn't work for me! Could you please send me the PDF file? bmg38@mchsi.com. Thanks!

  8. These printables are awesome! I have always loved using herbs and holistic medicine instead of just taking another pill. These will look so pretty sitting on my shelves!

  15. I love these labels! I'm gradually building my herb collection, so the ones I haven't used are my reminder shopping list :-)
    I love that the blank ones are included for other misc. herbs, etc. I printed some on green paper plus several extras of the page with mostly blanks. So even if the herbs aren't too interesting looking, the jars look pretty. I like the 'handwritten' font, too.
    Thanks again!

  16. Love these labels! Would you happen to remember the name of the two fonts you used to create these labels? I would love to use to same ones for other herbs/spices that aren't in the PDF. Thanks :)

    1. Unfortunately it would take a great amount of work to do that... I have since moved overseas and lost a lot of my original content. If I ever come across the files to modify, I will definitely add more as I too have Holy Basil in my apothecary right now... I am sorry I couldn't be of more help...
